  • No matter which back-up product a small company chooses, many organizations make the same mistakes. The most common mistake is to not back up at all, or to neglect backing up on a regular basis, Aberdeen Group vice president David Hill told News Factor.

  • ...while DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM are economical backup solutions, individual users remain responsible for putting backup rotation schemes in place and for keeping track of the media. With individual tapes' total data capacity well below that of hard drives found in today's PCs, backups would often have to span multiple tapes, making these tasks even more of a chore. Online backup services make more sense.

  • Neglecting to back up data on a regular basis is one of the most common mistakes SMBs make, says Aberdeen Group vice president David Hill. The second-biggest mistake is not having a rotation policy for sending tapes or other media offsite for disaster-recovery protection.

  • Few workers think about backing up files and data when heading home each day. People expect their data to be there when they show up the next morning. We all take for granted the reliability of our stored work.

  • Consider just how much time, money, and effort it would take to recover a system whose files were destroyed by mechanical failure, a virus attack, or user error. Also consider how much money you would lose simply because of downtime. A major purpose of backing up is to avoid such expenses.

Support All Common Operating Systems:

Obar4u Home of Obar4u Backup Software supports the two most common desktop and notebook operating platforms, Windows and Mac OS X. Therefore, you can use Obar4u Home to back up all the desktop and notebook computers within your company. Even if the Obar4u Offsite Backup Server (OBS) that Obar4u Home is pointing to is running on other operating platform such as Linux, Obar4u Home can also back up the data from Windows or Mac OS X normally onto the Obar4u OBS.

Support Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express:

Obar4u Max and Obar4u Home client applications of Obar4u Backup Software can be used to backup Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express.Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express are the two most popular email readers used by businesses and home users. However, backing up data stored in these two email readers is a headache to most users, with Obar4u Max and Obar4u Home users can back up these data easily by simply checking a single checkbox.

In-File Delta Technology:

Both client-side backup applicants, Obar4u Max and Obar4u Home are equipped with our proprietary In-File Delta technology. With this feature, the original file is required to be backed up once only, i.e. in the first backup job. Subsequently, only changes are necessary to be backed up. There are two types of In-File Delta that users can choose.

Incremental Type:

All delta files are generated with respect to changes made since the last incremental backup. It means the last full backup file and ALL incremental delta backup files are required to restore the latest snapshot of a backup file.

Differential Type:
All delta files are generated with respect to changes made since the last full backup file (i.e. differential backup). It means only the last full backup file and the last delta file are required to restore the latest snapshot of a backup file. Other intermediate delta files are only required if you want to restore other snapshots of a backup file. Differential in-file deltabackup has the benefits that a corrupted delta file would only make one particular version of a backup file non-recoverable and all other backups created by other delta files of the same file would still be intact.

Open File Backup:

Both client-side backup applicants, Obar4u Max and Obar4u Home, have integrated with Microsoft's latest Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) framework. It allows you to back up files that are being opened without any additional applications or plug-ins. VSS is only available on Windows XP / 2003 / Vista, and you must have administrative privileges to start the VSS service on a computer. Also, VSS will only work if at least one of your partitions is formatted using NTFS.

Flexible Backup Schedule:

Other than Continuous Data Protection (CDP), both our client-side backup applications, Obar4u Max and Obar4u Home, are equipped with flexible backup scheduler that allows you to implement your desired backup policy. As Obar4u Max is a comprehensive client-side application designed for backing up servers, it comes with an advanced scheduler which allows system administrators to create multiple backup schedules such as backup at a specific time and at multiple times per day etc. Obar4u Home is designed for desktop and notebook backup, thus its scheduler is with simpler options.

256-Bit Data Encryption:

All data will be compressed and encrypted with 256-bit encryption with an encrypting key selected by the user on the client-side applications, Obar4u Max and Obar4u Home, before being uploaded and stored on OBS. The encrypting key will NEVER be uploaded to OBS during backup. In addition, it is also possible to back up your critical data using a secure SSL channel which will further increase the level of security. On the other hand, decryption is only possible with user's encrypting key. Therefore, this whole mechanism provides exceptional security to the backed up data.

Support Windows Active Directory:

Obar4u Backup Software supports Windows Active Directory (AD). This means that if an AD is present in the network, it is only required to create an user account once in AD and the same user account can also be used in OBS, because OBS will create this user account automatically after authenticating this logon using AD. This eliminates the need of manually creating backup accounts on OBS by system administrators. When Windows Active Directory Authentication is enabled, user authentication will be dispatched to AD automatically if OBS fails to authenticate a user logon using its own records. This means that if an AD is present in the network, it is only required to create a user account once in AD and the same user account can also be used in OBS, because OBS will create this user account automatically after authenticating this logon using AD. To further synchronize OBS and AD, removal of users can be also configured. If you want to delete/disable OBS user account when the user is removed from AD, you can also configure it in OBS. You can have both options checked and create your own standard. For example, you can configure the settings in OBS so that when the user account is removed from AD after 10 days, the user account will be disabled and after 10 more days, the user account will be deleted.

Auto Software Upgrade:

Obar4u Offsite Backup Server (OBS) comes with an auto-upgrade feature. When auto-upgrade is enabled on an OBS, any Obar4u Max or Obar4u Home client-side applications connected to this OBS will be upgraded automatically whenever the OBS is upgraded to a new version.

Continuous Data Protection:

Obar4u Max and Obar4u Home are equipped with advanced Continuous Data Protection (CDP) feature which can be set to capture every version of the data of a file that has been saved to your hard drive. With CDP, whenever you have made changes to the files in the backup set, it will automatically backup the changes to OBS. Thus, it provides a highly dependable means of real-time, continuous data protection for file servers, desktops, and laptops effortlessly and transparently, without any human intervention.

Compliance

Sarbanes-Oxley, FINRA, HIPAA, and other regulations mandate safeguards surrounding the backup, privacy, and availability of sensitive information and certain records.  Obar4u goes to extreme lengths to be commercial-grade, offering all the access and security controls regulated industries desire.
